Being increasingly aware of the energy need of computing confirmed by the seemingly odd fact that server farms of Google1/Google2/Yahoo/Microsoft are often located strategically near electrical power plants, I would not be surprised to soon witness the birth of specific CO2 footprint calculated for internet services. How much CO2 does my Gmail account generates yearly? I would be interested to know, wouldn't you?

Ceiling Detail in the Aleppo Citadel

The Citadel of Aleppo is the most prominent historic architectural site in Aleppo. It was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. Its majestic stature forms the center of the city; in fact the city wraps around it extending a spider-like infrastructural web of streets forming the city's organic urban form.

The surrounding area is otherwise as flat as possible. One can read that this hill is possibly the result of several thousands years of past civilizations building on top of each other but there are also other explications.

Abandoned Patterns

About 2 km away from the center of Ar Raqqah, on the other side of the Euphrates not too far from the small bridge, located on a small plateau about 60 meters above the Euphrates valley I have found what seems to be an abandoned village where most of the houses had inside delicate visual patterns. I have gathered them on the picture here above.

Considering the mud-brick construction method used for the majority of the maisonettes it must be from recent history, I would assume a maximum of 50-150 years old.

Despite having asked and showed the pictures to local dwellers, no one could tell me more about it. If you have a clue please leave me a comment. I wonder why one would choose such a dry location when, 200 meters down from there, there is an easy access to the Euphrates' water.

Of course it is a lovely scenery, of course the temperature is mild and very enjoyable at this time of the year, of course the sun rays are friendly.... But hey! This is January 11th in Switzerland just a few couple kilometers away of the Bernese Alps. That lake of Thun could be frozen.

Is this global warming? Some say yes. Do you care? I do.

What makes this picture beautiful? Without the slightest hesitation it is the illusory anarchy of a nature that is left to itself. Fortunately this place was tough to reach as it would have otherwise been long straighten up, as everywhere else in Switzerland.

Wonderful Spectacle of Nature near Grasburg

A nice little walk along the Singine river near the Grasburg castle (Bern, Switzerland). The castle istself was not very fancy but climbing down to the river allowed me discovering a spectacle I did not expect finding in this part of Switzerland. In fact, the visual content was so dense that I could keep 40 pictures out of the about 360 shots i have made during about 2 hours.

Most interesting in this time of the year is how the whitness of the snow can highlight some elements on a picture. The delicate constructions nature made with ice were also a pleasure to the eyes.

I just read a interesting comment on the internet about the Israeli-Palestinian problem. As it is the first time in a long period that I read something on that topic that somehow gives hints for both a better understanding of the current situation and a possible future solution in just a few sentences, I relay it here:

Human nature dictates that people will NEVER agree on religion. However they can agree on government while agreeing to disagree on religion. Did you know the following? At the end of World War II on August 6, 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima by the Americans. The plants and trees in the area around the epicentre were examined in September 1945. Among the survivors were Ginkgo biloba trees. They were situated near the blast center and appeared to bud after the blast without major deformations and are still alive today. This leaf came from another ginkgo living in the botanical garden of Bern.

Like everyone else taking pictures I also invest time making sure it comes out the way I want it to be. That the electrical cable hanging over my head does not show up on the picture; that the strollers are gone; that the street is quiet; that the rain stops; that the smiles come.

There are many available tricks now made possible by computers. In some occasion I take several almost identical pictures and mix them later at home in such a way that the resulting picture has less strollers than any of the originals. Cheating? in a way yes, but sometimes I do not have the time to wait for enough of them to walk away and new ones keep coming. I also can bring some "sunlight" in a dull picture on the computer by enhancing its contrast and colors.

Best of course is using the real thing, that is, low-angled sun rays, and especially those soft ones from the last hour before sunset or first hour after sunrise. It gives stunning results almost whatever the subject. The only condition: being with your preferred camera at the right time and at the right place.

That is the beauty of photography, one can capture fugitive and fragile moments and give the impression it is always like that. But most of the time it is not and that is precisely why most take pictures, isn't?

La Dolce Vita

Genoa Gulf, one or two kilometers further East from Finale towards Savona.

A little outing from last Wednesday to last Saturday, 500km and about 5 hours away (if you can avoid the rush days) by car from most parts of Switzerland. Despite October the sun was strong enough to let us bath a couple of hours every day in the Mediterranean Sea, clean beaches and water made it possible.

Going Towards 100'000 Images, what for?

Creating and editing digital images are no longer reserved for computer freaks and gadgets addicts. It has become much easier, cheaper and much better. Most laboratories and most printers can print digital images directly on paper without the need of a computer or internet.

What is the differences between taking 100 pictures and 100'000? Considering the number of pictures with a digital camera one is only limited by the size of the memory card and the capacity of the battery, and as a result, more, much more pictures are shot and what do we do with all these pictures?

As to me I average 7'000 pictures per year and, since I started taking digital pictures in 1998, I totalized today around 60'000 pictures. Do I remember all those images? Of course no! So is that meaningless? Fortunately no. Taking pictures is a also pleasure at the very moment you shoot. It made me want to go out and do things, it made me curious, it made me attentive,

... and it made me want to share some of them here too.
